Agreement in principle

The seller got back to us this evening with a counterproposal.  We’ve agreed on general terms, but her lawyer made some changes to the contract, so we want to run them by our lawyer.  So I can’t quite say we’ve bought a house, or even that we’ve got a contract do so, but we’re getting awfully close.

I’m simultaneously excited and exhausted, and totally overwhelmed by the amount of work that we have to do over the next few months.  We’ve agreed on 60 days to close, but I’d like to get our current house on the market well before then.

Instead of obsessing here all the time, I’m starting a new blog, Feels Like Home, to post about the process of actually buying the house, selling this one, and moving.  It’s probably going to be fairly boring to anyone except those  — like Jackie— who are also going through the process (or plan on doing it soon).  But I think it will help me stay aware of the progress we’re making, not just the list of things that remain undone.

I do promise to post some pictures.

Wow that’s great! Good luck with all those next steps. We’re thinking of bidding at auction on Saturday, so I may be joining you at your blog.

Hope everything works out. I’ll definitely check out the new blog. I follow real estate like a sporting event.

One of the best pieces of advice our realtor gave us was to invest in a storage unit. He told us to empty the closets so that they were only about 1/3 full, get rid of extraneous furniture, empty our bookshelves completely except for a few family photots, and clean out our pantry. Basically, we turned out tiny 1300 square foot home into something that actually seemed spacious and airy. Anyone who had a toddler would have walked into our home and quickly realized that the half dozen beautiful little girl dresses hanging in her otherwise empty closet was totally a set up. There were a lot of positives with this approach. We got a lot of stuff packed and out of the house before putting it on the market and it was easier to keep it ready to show at all times because there were only maybe five toys left in the house (all tossed in a lovely wicker basket in the living room). At one point we even convinced ourselves that maybe the house was big enough for us!

Since there’s been zero action here or on your new-house bloglet for weeks, we can assume you got it and are submerged in cardboard boxes and reregistering the kids for their new school? if so, congratulations!
