I’m fine

I feel silly and dramatic even saying this, but since I got some worried notes on Facebook, I figured I should check in.  (And for those of you not in the US — there was a major accident on the DC metro this evening — the local news is reporting 9 dead.)   I'm not a red line rider, so it didn't even mess up my commute.

I'm crazy busy at work getting ready for my vacation, and then I'll be on vacation, so don't worry about me if I don't post for a week or so.

I’m an Orange Line person myself, and I got an email from my California relatives looking for reassurance. Pretty shocking event, and it seems to me likely from the kind of inattention we have been seeing a lot of with 8-car trains overshooting/undershooting the platform. Driving the trains is long periods of utter boredom punctuated by moments when what you do is crucial – it’s a hard kind of job to do.

Glad you’re fine. In a class back in college we discussed a lot why the news feels so personal when you have any, tenuous connection to the events. And the genius of the modern news to get us to care about the other stories too. I did think of you – enjoy your vacation!

Glad you’re fine–I was wondering! I live in DC too and I’ve gotten quite a few worried messages.

So, it’s been a week. Are we supposed to worry, now?

No worrying allowed for at least another week.
